10/17/2009 Great time to take a day off from blogging with a real deal NFL trade and all. Edwards was owned in just about every league, won’t be on the waiver wire but is starting only about half the time. Newsday sayz Edwards is catching on quick and; “the Jets won't have to limit much of their playbook with Edwards on the field against the Dolphins on Monday”. We still contend his issues in Cleveland were QB related. Sanchez is the 25th rated QB in the league, tied with benched Byron Leftwich and just a hair better than Kerry Collins. But you figure Sanchez will improve so you gotta start Edwards now, especially when the Jets have a favorable defensive match-up. The Fins are ranked #24 against the pass, but can get to the QB. Then the Jets have Buffalo, Oakland and Miami again. 10/3/09 Some reinforcement that the Bills will go with a two back attack. With Lynch and Jackson in the line-up last year, they split carries about a 65/35 with Lynch getting the goal line carries. Jackson has been thrown for losses in two of his three short yardage carries and the Bills have elected to pass on a couple of 3 and 1’s. With Jackson’s performance the first couple of weeks, total chances might even out a bit but I’d expect for Lynch to keep the goal line carries. 10/1/09 9/30/09 Posting a little late tonight, we’re Lions haters, but we’ll feast free pie, whatever the occasion. Mangini can’t make up his mind on a QB. Fred Taylor is now apparently the chairman of the Pats running back (by) committee. Note to anyone who’s got fantasy dudes playing the Texans, Houston is on pace to give up more rushing yards than any team in the history of professional football. 9/20/09 Our contention all last year was that Braylon Edwards didn’t have the drops; he has suck QB’s. Take a look at this. Does it count as a drop if you get a hand on the ball as it skims your shoelaces? Here’s a primer on why Packers D might be more bad ass then in the past. Figure that Louis Murphy will be a hot on the waiver wire this week. Might be worth it, dude’s an Eagle Scout. Going to guess that Donavan McNabb will be a game time decision at best. If you have a decent back-up, you probably want to leave McNabb on the bench. We were never real high on Anthony Gonzalez, and now he’s ooot for six weeks or so. Sayz here Pierre Garcon & Austin Collie could get more looks. Don’t go all loony tunes on the waiver wire just yet; I think it just going to be more receptions for the backs and Dallas Clark. The Dolphins didn’t do much against Atlanta. But our “Who’s the #1 receiver in Miami” mystery might be solved if Davone Bess has another week where he has seven receptions and no other Dolphin WR has more than two. In another “Who’s #1” situation; the other Steve Smith lead the Giants in receptions. We see this one setteling into a Philly-type situation; 3-4 Wrs in the mix, a couple of TEs, Rbs getting theirs. Really, nt good fantasy news for the receivers. 17,000 tickets were still available for the Jaguars home opener as of Wednesday afternoon. Will you move this team to Los Angeles all ready! Respected Detroit radio personality sayz Lions losing streak ends Week 8 vs the Rams; the Lions will have lost 23 straight at that point. Not-so-respected Detroit fantasy football blogger (yours truly) sayz, “don’t bet on it”. 9/9/09 8/19/2009 In other news (as if there is any). Jessica Simpson has moved down the depth chart. Career’s in the tank and she’s forced to date a third stinger. 8/18/2009 8/11/2009 We’re rooting for Iraq vet Tony Fein to make it with the Ravens, you should be too. 8/9/2009 8/8/2009 8/4/2009 8/2/2009
Don’t count on Jerricho Cotchery suiting up for the Jets Sunday. Braylon Edwards has proved he should be in your line-up, but don’t sleep on David Clowney either. Clowney ended up with more yards than Edwards last week against the Dolphins; and if the Bill rotate their coverage around to stop Edwards, Clowney could be in for another nice fantasy day. Take a look at him if you need a bye-week replacement.
We’ve been pounding this Titans-injured-secondary story to death. Expect big big days from anyone involved in the Pats passing game.
Sounds like Mendenhall and Parker will split time Sunday. Plenty of yards to go around this week against Cleveland’s last ranked run defense; start either dude.
Antonio Bryant is as healthy as he’s been in a while. Kellen Winslow is emerging as the Bucs #1 receiving threat, but Bryant should get his share of the action. Carolina on paper has the #2 passing defense in the league, but don’t let that scare you with either fantasy play; the Panthers D isn’t that good and their ranking will come back to earth.
The Los Angeles Times now leads the competition for this year’s “No Sh!t” headline award.
10/15/09
KC head coach Todd Haley’s been hating on this receivers all year. He gave the WR coaching job to Richie Anderson Thursday. You may remember Anderson for his 12 year career, as a running back. Don’t know how this will improve fantasy numbers; Dwayne Bowe moved in to the top 20 in this week 100% Correct WR Rankings.
Matt Stafford’s likely out with Dante Culpepper getting the start. If you’re depending on either, your fantasy squad needs more help than this humble blog can provide.
You likely heard here first that Vinatieri was injured. The Colts score a ton of points, so grab replacement Matt Stover.
More clamoring to get a team in Los Angeles. Today’s episode the Vikings.
10/14/09
In case you didn’t notice, Adrian Peterson only got 15 carries Sunday. Chester Taylor got nine. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Taylor carry a little more of the load to keep “all day” fresh toward the back half of the season.
Buffalo scribes are making the call for Trent Edwards to be benched. With Ryan Fitspatrick as the #2, I’d see the move as a step back for all Bills fantasy playz
Miles Austin more or less won a starting WR spot with his big game against KC. Says here that Patrick Clayton’s going to see the bench. Roy Williams stinks and he should be the one getting the boot. Either way, Clayton and Williams should be on your bench, and Austin should be this week’s waiver wire star.
Braylon Edwards got right into the Jets passing game with 5/64 and a TD. He’s gotta be in your line-up every week.
The Titans are down another CB, load up on opponent passing game options. You’ll go with your no-brainers on the Pats this week. But after next week’s bye, get your Jaguars in the line-up.
Adam Vinatieri might be hurt. If the Colts sign Stover, grab him if you need a kicker. Always have at least one kicker from a probable play-off team.
More kicker news. New Orleans will hang on to John Carney even as Garret Hartley is back from suspension. Don’t know what to make of this, but if you’re rolling with Carney, you may need to check the Sunday morning rosters to make sure Carney’s active.
Still waiting for Miami to bust out the wishbone, but for now the single wing Wildcat will do. Ricky Williams isn’t starting in a lot of leagues, but I’d recommend him after the bye this week if you’re solid at the other RB position. He’s been consistent all season and compliments a good #1 RB well, tossing in a guaranteed 8-10 points for you every week.
The Chiefs are sticking with Larry Johnson, for better or worse. You should stick with him, kind of. KC still has games against some bad rush D’s; San Diego, Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland. I’d keep Johnson out of your fantasy line up except in these match-ups.
Michael Bush will start at RB for Oakland. They stink, but every down backs are hard to come by. He’s worth a shot, we guess, if you’re bye week challenged.
Somebody else agrees with us that Jacksonville could very easily move to Los Angeles.
10/8/09
Ced Benson’s hot streak is due to end this week. The Ravens haven’t given up a 100 yard rusher in 39 games and just 18 in the last 10 years.
Willie Parker’s not optimistic about playing Sunday. Should be another big day for Rashard Mendenhall; the Lions have given up three 92 yard-plus days out of four games.
Mike Bush starts for Oakland Sunday. Outside of getting run over by the Cowboys, the Giants D has held opposing running backs in check. As we all know the Raiders are making a run at 0-16, so don’t expect much out of Bush save the odd goal line TD.
If you need a bye week tight end, Marcedes Lewis might be your dude. Just eleven catches, but he’s found himself in the end zone twice all ready, equalizing last years total.
Los Angeles is kicking up their heels again for a franchise. I say 2 to 1 it’ll be Jacksonville that makes the move.
Here’s St Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Brian Burwell’s take on Limbaugh buying the Rams. Not the most supportive.
Need a spot for next year’s fantasy draft, the 7-years-vacant Silverdome is up for grabs, no minimum bid.
Since you asked, The Roundtable stands as the only 4-0 squad in the Razzball Invitaional All-Star Blogger League.
Why were winning: Getting league #7 RB Cedric Benson in the eight round. Starting two of the top 12 WRs with second and third rounders Wayne and Colston.
All while overcoming: Taking Steeler D way too early in the sixth, Garrett Hartley’ suspention and Greg Olsen not doing much of anything.
Not sure if the Steelers Mike Wallace will continue his one game hot streak thought the season. What I do now is that Hines Ward is 33 years-old, I’m not all that sold on Santonio Holmes and Limas Sweed sucks. If you’re in a dynasty league or something, you should take a look a Wallace as he could be the Steelers #1 of the future.
Dwayne Bowe’s questionable and was limited in practice. Dude had decent fantasy days the first two weeks when he found the end zone but the Giants have the #1 pass D and an astonishing 49.2 passer rating against (perspective? Jake Delhomme has a 54.3 rating). Might be worth looking in another direction if you have other fantasy options.
Kevin Smith’s a game time decision. I’d guess he’ll play, be he’s going to have a tough fantasy day against an above average Bear defense, and he’s a Lion.
108 photos from the Lingerie Football League.
Ahmad Bradshaw will play Sunday, the question is how much. Newsday quotes Coughlin: "He has a unique style and I think he puts a lot of pressure, he has in the past, on that one ankle, he's got some issues there." That doesn’t sound good to me. Maybe this Gartrell Johnson dude is worth a look, or maybe Brandon Jacobs will get 50 carries.
Tomlinson’s will play, but as with Bradshaw, how much? Remember that dude’s 30, the Chargers are 2-1 and they’ve got two other solid RBs in the stable with Darren Sproles and Mike Bennett.
Jake Delhomme’s still the starter according to John Fox. Hard to tell how this will shake out for fantasy owners. At the beginning of the season, we liked him a bye-weeker with good match-ups Week 5 vs. Washington (if you need a replacement for Breese, Rivers, Rodgers or Cutler), Week 6 vs. Tampa Bay (replacing Romo, P Manning) and Week 8 vs. Arizona (when you have to sit Roethlisberger or Brady). He’s been the bottom half of performers the last two week; ya got two choices here if you have to depend on Delhomme in the coming weeks, dump him now and take your chances on the waiver wire or take your chances that Carolina gets it straightened out after the bye.
Looks like the Titans are going with two rookies in the secondary. Could mean good things for this week for Jacksonville with hot WR pick up Mike Sims-Walker and old man Torry Holt.
Roddy White thinks his numbers will improve after a slow start. Fantasy playaz who took him early are still waiting, White’s dropped to #30 in our 100% Correct Wide Receiver Rankings. I think he’ll pick up a bit, but with Tony Gonzalez, there are more receiving options for Matt Ryan to chose from.
Derek Anderson’s going to start. Always liked the guy and thought he got jobbed because of the pressure to get #1 draft pick Brady Quinn in the game. Don’t be tempted to pick him up though; there are though match-ups on the horizon with Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Green Bay and Chicago in the near future.
Marion Barber’s will play and won’t be limited Sunday. Look for him to get about two-thirds of the action. Tough to start Tashard Choice this week, he’ll be picking up the scraps.
ESPN’s man love for Favre continues with three posts today alone from Kevin Seifert.
Look for Roethlisberger on WWE Monday Night Raw; because that’s how he needs to be spending his time as QB of a potentially 1-3 team.
Jake Delhomme’s head has officially been called for by the local media. Here’s just about everything you need to know about heir apparent Matt Moore.
If a sports media outlet could sport collective wood it’s gonna be this week as the ESPN properties go nutty leading up to this week’s Minnesota/Green Bay Monday night game. Today’s edition, Favre had a secret desire to play for the Vikings while he was still in Green Bay.
Says here that Fred Jackson “will probably be giving way to (Marshawn) Lynch in the next few weeks.” Maybe, Jackson’s a sit this week against a tough Miami rush defense, but time will tell how the Jackson/Lynch tandem will work out. Don’t go dropping Jackson yet.
Chad Henne’s the man now in Miami. Dude played OK when he came in to replace Chad Pennington Sunday. This is likely the passing of the torch. Pennington was in the last year of his contract, with Henne all ready being groomed as his successor. Henne was one bad man in college, leaving Michigan as the leader in just about every career passing category. I’d get a hold of him now if you’re in some kind of dynasty league.
Looks like Frank Gore’s out for two games. Get on Glen Coffee as the 49ers go up against two of the bottom 10 defenses against the run in the next two weeks, St Louis and Atlanta.
Danny O’Neil must be an owner, he asks; “why isn’t TJ Houshmandzadeh getting (the) ball in key situations?”
When are dudes gonna learn to stay off twitter?
A couple of last minute things for your head...
The Charlotte Observer makes the case for the Atlanta defense.
Didn’t remember that Steve Slayton had two 100-yard rushing games last year against the staunch Titan D.
Hank Baskett got picked up in about 10% of leagues. Hold your water people, Pierre Garcon’s the play here to step in as the Colts #2 receiver.
Antonio Bryant’s out. Michael Clayton is only owned in about 20% of leagues and got a ton of luv from Byron Leftwich last week. He’ll likely be the focus until Bryant’s back and worth a pick-up vs Buffalo this week if you need somebody.
LT’s out. I like Michael Bennett as a last minute pick-up. Gotta figure he’ll at least split carries with Darren Sproles and get the goal line carries.
Jacksonville.com as Tom Brady as a “start” today; LT as a “sit”. Thanks dude!
Guessing that the New York Times is the only American newspaper with a full time architechure critic. Dude hates on the new Cowboys stadium (naturally).
9/17/09
This dude from the Charlotte Observer agrees with the Roundtable that Jake Delhomme will be fine this week.
Tim Cowlishaw has the Cowboys at 8-8.
Washington’s looks under any rock to find an edge against the Giants this week.
Miami put David Martin on IR leaving the TE spot wide open for Anthony Fasano. Figure he’ll improve his 454 yard/7 TD from last year. Look for him to touch 600-700 yards.
Lots of news out of Tampa. More downfield routes. Cadillac Williams is #1 on the depth chart. The Cadillac this is out of left field; kind of. In pre-season game three the Bucs trotted out their 2-2-1; With the starters going into the third quarter, Williams started and ended up with 8/54, Graham had 5/39 and Ward was 4/3. Only Ward caught any passes. This is bad news for fantasy players.
9/6/2009
If you’ve been watching Hard Knocks on HBO, one of the big drama points has been about whether DeDe Dorcy or Brian Leonard will make the team. They both made it. Maybe HBO should consider getting Entourage’s story line together; really, a stalker?
My man Steve Hauschka won the kicking job in Baltimore. As far as I can tell, he’s the only dude in NFL history to hold a degree in neuroscience.
Oakland cut Jeff Garcia. In the end, I guess this is the smart move if they’re committed to JaMarcus Russell. Garcia can only be a distraction as he had his eyes on the #1 gig from the start. Unfortunately, committing to Russell is not a smart move; this team has the potential to go 0-16 (it could come down to the week 16 date at Cleveland).
The Bills cut Dominic Rhodes. If you can set aside that Buffalo fired their offensive coordinator 10 days before the season, you can likely pick up (or draft very late) Fred Jackson and get some good numbers the first three games of the year while Marshawn Lynch is suspended. Xavier Omon is the only other RB on the roster until Lynch returns, so you’d figure Jackson will get the bulk of the work.
Saints TE Billy Miller tore his Achilles and is ooot for the year. Jeremy Shockey’s value just went up, pick him up or draft him if you’ve got the space.
We love fantasy ball, but chalk this one as going too far. I say, if you’re going to get on a plane for a fantasy draft, you should get on a plane that’s going to Vega$.
9/5/2009
Turk Schonert got fired. If you sack the OC, you’d figure that you’d change the offensive philosophy but Schonert was dumped for Alex Van Pelt who has next to no experience and apparently they’re going to stick with no huddle. I think something else is up here; whatever happens you can’t think this is going to be good for TO ‘s fantasy value. Dude wasn’t happy with Donovan McNabb and an established west coast scheme. How’s he going to react with a rook OC, an untested system and last year’s seventeenth rated passer in Trent Edwards? It’s late in the game, but I’m moving TO to our “avoid” list.
Kevin Jones is out for the season. All this does for fantasy playaz is make the other Adrian Peterson the handcuff play if you’re drafting Matt Forte.
9/2/2009
In case you haven’t noticed; Michael Crabtree hasn’t signed yet. This dude sayz, and we concur, that he’s pretty much wasted his rookie year. Don’t bother with him this year unless you’re in some kind of dynasty league.
This one’s for the Detroiters in the audience: WDFN’s back with some local talent. That station was Stoney & Wojo and Jaime Samuelsen and they’re nowhere to be found. Never the biggest Baligian guy in the world, but he’s back; he rebuffed our offer last year to appear on Fantasy Sports Geekly.
Weird to dump a coach right before the season starts, but OC Chan Galey is ooot in KC. Tough to tell what this will mean to the Chiefs offense, you’re not going to install a new system at this point. Gotta figure that Galey got the ax because of play calling. Haley took over those duties in Arizona last season and as you may have heard, AZ skill players had a pretty good year in 2008. As we uncovered in our WR rankings…
New HC Todd Haley was the “Passing Game Coordinator” for Dallas 2005-06, then the OC for the Cardinals 2007-08. In four years, he produced seven 1,000 yard receivers and Anquan Boldin’s 12-game 850 yard 2007; basically two 1,000 yard receivers a year.
Bowe’s on everybody’s radar, but look out for whoever emerges as KC’s #2 Mark Bradley or Bobby Engram
Some stuff I saw in Saturday/Sunday/Mondays pre-season games
New Orleans/Oakland
We may have seen the best and worst teams in the league. Oakland was so bad….
…they had two first downs in the second half
…New Orleans scored on 4 of their first 5 drives; 10, 8, 11 and 13 plays.
…Joey Harrington threw a touchdown pass
Do not draft any Raider this season.
Buffalo/Pittsburgh
I wouldn’t figure a platoon situation with Rashard Mendenhall and Willie Parker. I’d say one or the other will get most of the time. Mendenhall ran well against the Bills; you might want to pick him up late in your draft just in case.
Just a point of clarification, the Piotr Czech that kicked for the Steelers is not the same Petr Cech of England’s Chelsea FC.
Cleveland/Tennessee
No clarity on who’ll be the Brown’s starting QB. With every chance in the world, neither dude has stepped up. And a guy at my real (non-blogging) job told me that Lewis was going to get cut.
Justin Gage was sweet. We picked him up in the 11th round of a draft last night. Huge value if you can get him that late.
Giants/Jets
I’m now convinced that Ahmad Bradshaw will get between 140 and 180 carries this year will put him between 550 and 900 yards. It’ll come down to the TDs, he’d need at least seven with the rushing yards to be a solid fantasy performer, I don’t think he’ll get there.
Draft Chansi Stucki; in line for 900 yards and more than a couple TDs.
Seattle/KC
Julius Jones looked good. But. He had one carry on a second and two early on; then Seattle passed on the next three short yardage situations. Take Jones at your own risk; but could be a big reward if he ends up playing in the red zone.
8/29/2009
Here's what we saw in Thursday/Friday pre-season action.
Jacksonville/Philadelphia
Torry Holt was targeted six times in the first half. The Jags WR situation has been a shamble since Jimmy Smith retired after the 2005 season. Smith was good for 70/1000/6 or so under Jack Del Rio; it’s not like the coaching staff is against working a go-to type receiver, they just haven’t had the talent. Holt should be around in the seventh or eighth round of your draft. We’re gonna say he’s got one more year left and is a better fantasy play than other WR who’ll be around at that spot. Derrick Mason, Kevin Walter, Donald Driver. Check out the WR rankings for the full story.
Who knows what’s going to happen with Vick. From his work in this game, maybe he’ll be a 10-15 play a game guy in the Wildcat. Not enough action to warrant a fantasy roster spot.
Miami/Tampa Bay
Throw another WR in the mix for the Dolphins. Rook Brian Hartline impressed in his first start.
Byron Leftwich did enough to win the Bucs starting QB spot. Tampa held to what they’re calling a 2-2-1 RB rotation. Cadillac Williams started and was productive. Derrick Ward and Earnest Graham also saw time. I don’t know if it rolled like this because they were trying to evaluate the QB’s but the Bucs ran 17 times and passed 35 with the first teamers. If this holds for the regular season, even to a lesser degree, there won’t be enough rushing attempts to make any of these guys a reliable fantasy RB.
St Louis/Cincinnati
Samkon Gado more or less locked up the #2 RB gig for the Rams as far as I’m concerned. I’d take Gado as the handcuff if you’re drafting Steven Jackson.
Green Bay/Arizona
Take a look at the box score. This is what Cardinal games looked like last year and what they’ll look like in 2009. 54 pass attempts, 22 rushes. Huge WR numbers, RBs got their TDs but not many yards and no factor in the passing game. Arizona’s defense stinks giving up long passes and long rushes; the Cards had to wing the ball around in the last 20 minutes to make it close.
We’re sticking with the theory that a 16-game healthy Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin will finish #1 and #2 in WR fantasy points this year. Whoever runs the ball for Arizona; Hightower, Beanie or a combination will put up some TDs but will have disaster fantasy games if they don’t find the end zone, there aren’t any rushing or receiving yards there to make up the difference.
8/28/2009
Mike Bell’s really showing well in Saints camp. With the way their RBs go down every year, he might be worth a draft day shot if you have deep rosters or you can afford to carry a dude that won’t produce right away.
Miami’s WR situation’s a mess. Pretty sure Ted Ginn starts but after that it’s up in the air. Look for the Dolphins to continue to spread the receptions around; you should avoid their corps entirely on fantasy draft day. Pennington threw for almost 3,700 yards last year but no Miami receiver went over 790 yards or scored more than three TD.
Story about how Jay Culter and Greg Olsen are getting along. Don’t think we’re going to bother with TE rankings, but take a shot on Olsen if you can get him late.
Brandon Marshall: Pain in the ass.
Dudes in Razzball's $1,000,000 Fantasy Football Blogger League are choosing a topic to discuss every week. This week; "Which QB, RB, or WR with an ADP in the 10th or worse (on Fantasy Football Calculator) is your choice as the ultimate sleeper." BigTroph's hosting the posts this week. Check it out and if you're a Roundtable reader, our post will sound familiar.
If you’re that deep in the fantasy game, you can insure your team. And if you’re this deep, you probably need help.
8/26/2009
Since we don’t have any history to look at, we didn’t know how Raheem Morris was going to use his RBs. To read this, it looks to be more of a rotation that we were originally lead to believe. We had Earnest Graham listed as our #10 RB. Will make the change with this new information and update our RB rankings.
Steve Hauschka’s on his way to winning the Ravens kicking job. Guessing he’s the only dude in the league with a degree in Neuroscience.
More kicker stuff. Garrett Hartley was suspended for the first four games of the year for taking Adderall. Could this be the first of sign of trouble for the Roundtable’s team in the Razzball All-Star Blogger League? We took him the 11th round, the third kicker overall. Guess you gotta pass on him draft day, no use for a suspended kicker. We’re dropping Hartley and picking up Chris Henry.
8/25/2009
Shaun Hill’s the starter in San Francisco. I liked this dude a lot at the end of last year. Threw at least one TD pass seven of the eight games he started at the end of the year. I’d figure him for 3500 passing yards and about 20 TDs; which puts him in the Eli Manning/Jake Delhomme fantasy QB range.
Edgerrin James signs with Seattle. Don’t figure on any fantasy value, but I’d take it as a statement that Julius Jones is not pleasing his coaches.
Real newspapers are starting to cut into our action:
Sleepers from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
USA Today recaps pre-season week two from the fantasy perspective.
No Detroit paper is writing about Lions’ fantasy draft potential; leave that to scribes from Philly.
8/22/2009
More reasons to shun Brandon Marshall. 1) Dude didn’t travel for Seattle for Saturday’s pre-season game. 2) Dude ran with the scout team in practice this week. The Broncos are likely to ask for the same set of draft picks that Cleveland wanted for Braylon Edwards and Arizona wanted for Anquan Boldin. Neither team got takers; this could drag out for a while.
Tony Gonzales will be a playa on third downs and at the goal line for the Falcons; like how he caught a 14 yard TD pass last night. With the other weapons in the Atlanta offence, I still see his numbers coming back a bit; probably 60 catches 750 yards, but 5-8 TDs.
How many punts will hit the Cowboys new 60 yard video screen this season? For entertainment purposes only the official Roundtable over/under is 8.
Looks like Austin Collie is in line for the #3 WR gig in Indianapolis. Historically, this spot isn’t worth much in fantasy terms. There aren’t many fantasy numbers available after Wayne, Gonzalez and Clark get theirs.
Rosie Greer did needle point, guess this isn’t so bad.
8/20/2009
Gotta agree with USA Today’s take on eight playaz “that should overpreform their draft position”. And I really dig how they avoided referring to “sleepers”. I’d stay away from Anthony Gonzalez and Vincent Jackson though. Dallas Clark is the Colt’s #2 receiver; finishing second on the team in catches, receiving yards and TDs last year. Jackson had decent numbers last year, but too many sucka fantasy games for my taste.
Beanie Wells twisted his ankle. That’s two injuries; zero NFL games.
The Lions are officially just pulling guys off the street now. New signing Dane Looker used the off season to take some classes at Home Depot on how to build a deck and was building said deck 48 hours before he joined the team.
While were on the subject. If you're a frequent reader, you know the Roundtable HQ is in Detroit and we often link to the world's second best football site 0and16.com. Mixed emotions when I tried to register 0and32.com. Somebody beat us to it, but it's still pretty sweet.
Venus and Serena Williams are getting into fantasy football; Daniel Snyder style, they’re buying a slice of a real team.
I dare you.
Live team coverage of Favre ‘09
ESPN’s wettest dream: Packers/Vikes on MNF 10/5.
Tickets: expensive as hell.
Packers fans: “mixed”.
Vikings fans: feelin', pretty, psyched.
This blogger: pissed.
Rosenfels/Jackson say right things: likely pissed.
Farve: kind of an ugly baby.
Farve fantasy value: back-up QB at best. His arm isn’t healed and he's old.
Check out this Friday’s Vikes/Chiefs game is get some insight on how Percy Harvin will fit into the Minnesota offense.
Too early to call the Brown’s QB starter; both dudes got time with the first squad in the first preseason game. Tells me that neither is stepping up and taking the job.
Coach is not happy with the Chiefs corps of receivers. Dwayne Bowe didn’t start in the first preseason game and they signed retread Ashley Lelie.
Eli hasn’t picked a #1 receiver yet.
Remember the name Isaac Redman. Especially if you’re a Willie Parker owner and “Redzone” Redman takes all the goal line TDs.
Coaches punching coaches is no way to start the season.
8/15/2009
Light on the updates recently as we've been a litte under the weather and Roundtable HQ has been turned upside down by a Detroit summer tradition.
Here’s what I saw in Thursday/Friday night’s pre-season games I got a chance to watch.
Rams/Jets
Steven Jackson didn’t play much, but was in there on the one third down. Think that the Rams will use Jackson’s pass catching ability rather than pulling him for a third down specialist.
Former Ravens DC and new Jets head coach Rex Ryan has implement the scheme that’s made Baltimore the most feared defense in the league. Give him two years to get the right players together and the Jets have a change to dominate the league.
Ravens/Redskins
Seems like Washington refuses to throw the ball down field. Don’t look for their receivers to improve on last year’s numbers without a change in philosophy.
Sounds like Willis McGahee is having a heck of a camp; he might split time a little more evenly with Ray Rice.
Teams are working on defending the wildcat this pre-season. Look for this gimmick to be less affective this season.
Not going to say anything about Michael Vick; just a link this column from Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press.
Manlove.
Broncos release Ryan Torian; leaving them with just three RBs that will get time.
Good news for the Broncos is Brandon Marshall was found not guilty of whatever he was in court for.
Carson Palmer lightly sprained his ankle.
Sam Hurd’s stock is up; Miles Austin is down
Donald Brown moves closer to the starting job
Starters didn’t play much in Sunday’s Hall Of Fame Game. We learned that the Bills will be using the hurry-up offense “frequently”. Could make Lee Evans a little more valuable. The Titans wasted a sweet fake punt on a preseason game.
The Bengals released Ken Watson. Unclear if DeDe Dorsey or rook Bernard Scott steps in as #2 RB behind Ced Benson.
Mohamed Massaquoi is practicing with the first team in Cleveland.
Tony Romo and Roy Williams status: still productive.
Today’s injury round-up
Beanie Wells is still injured.
Donnie Avery’s out up to six weeks.
Antonio Bryant’s out the rest of the preseason.
Carolina’s Steve Smith hurt his shoulder.
Teams had to turn in a depth chart today. Here’s some things I found interesting...
Starting QB is undecided in Minnesota.
Correll Buckhalter is #1 on the Broncos depth chart. Luke McCown is #1 in Tampa. Davone Bess is ahead of Greg Camarillo in Miami.
Sammy Morris is #1 RB in New England. Faulk #2, Taylor #3 then Maroney and Green-Ellis
Darrius Heyward-Bay is the #1 WR in Oakland, Justin Fargas is the #1 RB over Darren McFadden in Oakland
Have gone all preseason without posting any cheerleader stuff. The streak ends here (I thought T-Pain was in the funhouse).
Apparently the Bucs offense is still a work in progress. Byron Leftwich is ahead in the QB race, but by no means has locked it up. New OC Jeff Jagodzinski is still getting his legs underneath him, but this is the second article I’ve seen this offseason about how Tampa will be throwing deep.
Says here that Greg Lewis is competing for the #3WR gig in New England. Historically, the Pats #3 WR is good for 40/450/4, worth a spot as a #5 fantasy receiver in a twelve team league.
New Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye sees Frank Gore and rook Glen Coffee “working together”. To me that means at the minimum 70/30 split in production. Gore only put up more than 20 carries three times in 2008 as pretty much the main guy; tough to tell if Gore will get enough of the ball to be a #1 fantasy RB.
A couple of things to note in this Bears article; Greg Oslen is “ready to explode” and “(Kevin) Jones has been assured more playing time.” We’ve heard enough drum beats, so when we get around to doing the TE rankings, expect Oslen to be in the top 5. The Kevin Jones thing should be of interest if you were thinking about drafting Matt Forte. Forte got 80% of the running back carries last season, which is pretty much the maximum any RB got last year. Anything that Jones or Garrett Wolfe get will take away from Forte’s numbers.
Roddy White signs. Doubt he missed enough camp to hold back his 2009 fantasy performance.
Devin Hester made a believer out of this Chicago Tribune columnist.
Ochocinco and Palmer are back in the swing. Chad put up 7/78/1 in the Saturday’s intersquad scrimmage.
Syndric Steptoe is out for the year.
Not as interesting as LenDale White’s Patron-free diet program, but Giants rook Hakeem Nicks lost LBs laying off the Little Debbi snack cakes.
David Akers knocked home a 60 yard field goal. Who knows if he’ll get the chance in a regular game, but it might be worth a peek at your leagues point system to see if you get ridiculous points for a 60+ yard kick.
This isn’t totally crazy. I’d pay $60 for a pizza, if it was delivered by one of the cheerleaders.
So we wrote in the WR rankings that Eddie Royal would be the possession receiver in Denver’s imitation Patriots offense. According to this, the role of Wes Welker will be played by Brandon Stokley. If this is the case, figure Stokley’s numbers with a Kyle-Orton-sucks discount on what Welker does for the Pats; about 90/900/6.
Familiarize yourself with this season’s rule changes.
Matt Sanchez is closing on the Jets starting QB job.
Brian St. Pierre is getting a shot at the #2 QB job in Arizona. I like this a lot, most teams would force a $51 million stiff like Matt Leinart into the starting role. Not only do the Cards go with Warner at #1, they are at least entertaining the possibility of St. Pierre taking over as the back-up. Pay attention to this during camp, especially if you’re looking at Warner.
Josh Cribbs is getting reps with the Browns first team as the #2 WR. Even if he holds off rooks Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi, I don’t see much fantasy value. Figure Cleveland’s QB will struggle this year and won’t be able to get the ball to Braylon Edwards enough, let alone the team’s second option.
We can all sleep now, Carolina settled on a long-snapper.
Sounds like Bears #3 WR Brandon Rideau has some game.
Tony Romo and Roy Williams have been upgraded from “not clicking” to “productive”
Add New Orleans to the list of squads that might break out the Wildcat formation.
Tavaris Jackson heard a pop in his knee. Sounds like he’s still a little gimpy, but as we reported; it’ll take another week or so for him to fully recover.
Forget “what happens in Vega$...”, the real first rule in Sin City is don’t Welch on a loan from a casino. I’ll put ten bucks down that Lamont Jordan ends up with a knee cap injury in the near future.

We skipped Roundtable updates yesterday due to lack of compelling news. Charlotte Observer’s having the same problems. Check out their break down of the Panther’s long snapper battle.
These dudes are Roundtable readers. As we posted last week in our RB rankings, figure that Steven Jackson’s numbers will look like Brian Westbrook’s with new Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur dropped from the Eagles coaching tree.
Julius Jones will roll up some yards, but like it says here, don’t figure him for a lot of TDs. Goal line stuff will go to T. J. Duckett. Figure Jones as a low #2, but a good option late if you go for WRs at the top of the draft.
Roddy White hold out watch Day Six: $95,328 in fines. Harry Douglas out for the year. Falcons sign Robert Ferguson and Marty Booker.
Snoop visits Ravens camp.
Here’s another big list of playa rankings from the AP via StlToday.com
8/5/2009
Amani Toomer signed with the Chiefs. We’ll see how he’s used. I had incumbent #2 WR Mark Bradley pretty high on the receiver rankings, #29. New Kansas City offensive coordinator Todd Haley had basically eight 1,000 receivers in his offence in the last four years running the Cowboys and Cardinals offenses. The slot or third WR doesn’t do much in Haley’s offense, figure Toomer as a low #3 fantasy WR if he can unseat Bradley.
The Vikes are all ready getting creative with how they use Percy Harvin. Minnesota had the third most rushing attempts in 2008 and were one of the seven teams that had more rush attempts than pass attempts. The more Harvin touches the ball the more he’ll cut into Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor’s productivity.
Roddy White hold out watch Day Four. Fine, $63,550. Harry Douglass gets extra reps.
Antonio Camarite was busted for tweeting. I don’t twitter, put here’s the link.
Darrius Heyward-Bey has hands of Teflon.
Marshawn Lynch will have to sit out the first three games. Don’t see this increasing the value of Fred Jackson too much. He’ll split time 67/33 with Dominic Rhodes until Lynch is back.
You can buy game worn gear from the Lingerie Football League. I’m not posting the link; you sickos can find it yourselves.
I don’t know what “combo back” means, but whatever it is it doesn’t look good for Le’Ron McLain’s fantasy numbers or anybody’s for that matter. Sounds like the Baltimore RB roles will shake out like this; Ray Rice is the lead guy splitting about 65/35 with Willis McGahee. McClain will get the goal line, short yardage and “if the Ravens have the lead in the fourth quarter”. If you figure that the Ravens will throw the ball a little more with a seasoned Joe Flacco, you’re looking at about 2,000 rushing yards and 16 rush TD split between the three backs. A killer year for one dude, and not awful if split between Rice and McGahee, but add our combo back in the mix and you’re not going to get the gross numbers or consistency out of any of these options.
Roddy White hold out watch Day Three: $47,664 in fines. 2005 Topps card, $1.24.
Greg Olsen is now Chicago’s starting TE. Kind of an odd proclamation as Olsen had a bigger 2008 than starter Desmond Clark. 54/574/5 to Clark’s 41/367/1. Might signal a shift in philosophy. New QB Jay Cutler doesn’t have many options at WR, maybe this is a play to get Olsen more catches.
Tony Romo and Roy Willimas are still not clicking.
Jim Zorn is giving Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly every opportunity to take the #2 WR job from Antwaan Randel El.
Only one man should rock a Mohawk. His name begins with MR and ends with T. All others are fools. Dye jobs are out, too. Beards are ok.
Rashard Mendenhall took a hip-hop dance class to keep in shape during the offseason. For your enjoyment, vid of his dance recital is here.
Here’s some more ins-and-out on how the Cowboys will run the ball more this year. We saw this coming and Romo is #7 in our first shot at QB rankings; a little lower than you’ll see in other places. The Cowboys have three talented RBs, they’ll all get their shot so you can’t count on one or the other break out with a big fantasy year.
The Dolphin WR situation is wide open. You get the feeling from reading this that Sparano wants a go to guy, but no one has stepped up. We’ll have to watch this situation develop in camp, but if a #1 does emerge, you should figure on a 1000 yard, 8 TD kind of season.
This article from the Buffalo News breaks down some third year receivers. Waiting for the article about unicorns; because like unicorns, the theory that receivers are likely to break out their third year in the pros is the figment of someone’s imagination.
A.J. Hawk dropped a G on a cab ride.
According to this a Grade I Medial Collateral Sprain, like Tarvaris Jackson has, put you on the shelf for 10-14 days.
I don’t like Beanie Wells and hurting his ankle the first day of practice doesn’t help the situation.
I like Julius Jones a lot this year and it seems like he digs OC Greg Knapp’s offensive scheme. He’s way down on some draft boards this year but is a good value pick for a #2 RB; should be there in the fifth or sixth round for a 12 team league. You can draft a #1 RB, a couple of good receivers and a top QB then have Jones available for you rather than taking that #2 RB in the second or third round.
I don’t like this, Rams run 30 live tackling plays on the first day of practice. Roundtable #1 RB Steven Jackson needs to be protected.
LenDale White lost thirty-seven pounds by cutting out the Patron.
8/1/2009
QB rankings are good to go. We honor our Motor City brothers and sisters by ranking the QBs per their place in the GM car line-up.
We’ll be looking for clues on what Tampa's offense will look like with new Offensive Coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski. Says here they were chucking the ball down the field the first day of camp, something absent from the former regime’s playbook.
Roddy White is officially holding out.
Tavaris Jackson sprained his MCL. There’s a battle between Jackson and Sage Rosenfels for the starting gig; missing even a week of camp could give Rosenfels the edge.
Not nearly the ESPN coverage, but Derrick Mason will end his three week retirement.
Brady Quinn lined up with the first team offense.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one: Brian Westbrook is “hobbled” and won’t put on pads for a couple of weeks.
James Harrison pulled up to camp in his new rig. A Smart Car.
Every Jet made weight to start training camp, except their fat ass coach.
In case you don’t live in the Buffalo area, you can buy TO’s cereal here. Unsure if you just get the box, or if the cereal comes with it.
7/30/2009
“Brandon Marshall” and “trade” appear in first five paragraphs of this story, so there might be something to it.
Roddy White might hold out.
Lots of opinion on where Mike Vick will end up. The Chicago Tribune has the best round-up.
Tony Romo and Roy Williams are off to a rocky start.
Light on the updates recently as we've been a litte under the weather and Roundtable HQ has been turned upside down by a Detroit .Here’s what I saw in Thursday/Friday night’s pre-season games I got a chance to watch.Steven Jackson didn’t play much, but was in there on the one third down. Think that the Rams will use Jackson’s pass catching ability rather than pulling him for a third down specialist.Former Ravens DC and new Jets head coach Rex Ryan has implement the scheme that’s made Baltimore the most feared defense in the league. Give him two years to get the right players together and the Jets have a change to dominate the league.Seems like Washington refuses to throw the ball down field. Don’t look for their receivers to improve on last year’s numbers without a change in philosophy.Sounds like Willis McGahee is having a heck of a camp; he might split time a little more evenly with Ray Rice. Teams are working on this pre-season. Look for this gimmick to be less affective this season. Not going to say anything about Michael Vick; just a link this column from of the Detroit Free Press..
Braylon Edwards failed his physical and was placed on the non-injury football injury list.
Quote of the year nominee #3
“The plan is we don’t have a plan” – Jim Schwartz, Lions Head Coach (naturally)
Here are some dude from the AP’s fantasy rankings. QB. RB. WR. TE. K. D.

What stopped me in this article about Devin Hester is that he “…continues to evolve into a No. 1 receiver.” Hester went 25/347/1 in the Bears last six games last season. Now that there’s a decent QB in Chicago, the “#1 WR” might mean something; The Bears haven’t had a 1,000 yard receiver since 2002. Chicago didn’t draft a WR until the third round and showed Brandon Lloyd & Marty Booker the door, leaving Hester as Cutler’s possible go-to guy.
Mike Lopresti of Gannett tells the Queen to shove it.
We’re rooting for Iraq vet Rulon Davis to make the Broncos as a rookie free agent; you should too.
Make us a promise, if you must take Matt Stafford, you will sing The Matthew Stafford Song.
4/22/2009 If Baltimore wants to draft a kicker, they should look at this guy.
Atlanta gets Tony Gonzalez from Kansas City. Funny that they send a second round pick in next year’s draft, rather than this one. You’d figure that KC would want get what they could to improve the team this year, they gave up their second rounder to get Matt Cassel. On Atlanta’s side, TE’s only caught 24 passes for 229 yards and 3 TD’s last year.
Atlanta Offensive Coordinator Mike Mularkey is a former NFL TE and former TE coach, but oddly didn’t employ the TE much running the Steelers offence from 2001 to 2003, as his stint as head man in Buffalo 2004-2005 or last season. You don’t trade for Tony Gonzalez and not plan to use him, but Atlanta’s offence did just fine without using a TE in 2008. The Roundtable’s early assessment is that Atlanta will continue to pound the run after finishing #2 in carries last year and use Gonzalez a little less between the 20’s than KC did. Figure 60 catches 700 yards, but still 6-8 red zone TDs.
John DeShazier from The New Orleans Times-Picayune makes the case that Pierre Thomas should be the Saints feature RB. Many mock drafts have NO going with Beanie Wells; you’ll be able to tell Thomas’s fantasy future with how the Saints go with their #1 pick.
4/21/2009
Torry Holt to Jacksonville. Since Jimmy Smith left the team after the 2005 season, the Jags spread the ball around with Matt Jones’s 65/761/2 last year being their biggest WR year in three seasons. Add to that Holt’s bad knee and I don’t see him being much more than a #3 Fantasy WR this year.
Jay Cutler parties.
Lion fans want Aaron Curry. Unfortunately, Lion management isn’t very good at drafting.
Apparently drafting QBs is risky, so is drafting a WR. Trading a Pro Bowl lineman is risky, as is taking out your daddy’s $40,000 car.
Torry Holt to the Jacksonville? Remember fantasy players, Holt will be 33 years-old by the time the season starts. Not many elite WRs at the age, at best (especially in the Jags run-first offence) he will be a #3 WR for you. Kellen Clemens is the #1 guy for the Jets, now. Can’t think they’ll stick with this guy, I say don’t be suprized if the Jets pull a trade for someone that’s…good. Clements was the #33 ranked passer in the NFL when he last got significant playing time in 2007. Which says something since there are only 32 NFL teams. That said: he may be on a mission from God.
Buffalo News comes in with a look at Saturday’s draft from a Fantasy Football perspective.
The Denver Post reports that the Broncos and new HC Josh McDaniels will implement “...a trio-at least-of tailbacks, each with 10 to 15 touches a game.” I don’t know if I buy that. As Offensive Coordinator for the Pats McDaniels had a lot of RB injuries. When his first choice players were available, McDaniels ran a 60/40 running back platoon with Kevin Faulk thrown in there for the occasional reception or third down run. New signings Correll Buckhalter and Lamont Jordan are both the wrong side of 30, but McDaniels put Corey Dillion and Sammy Morris to go use in New England. Your momma could run for 1,000 yards behind Denver’s old blocking scheme, so time will tell which hold-overs emerge out of Peyton Hillis, Sevlin Young and Ryan Torian. As it stand now; I’d figure one of Buckhalter or Jordan will split time with the other FA signing J.J. Arrington who is the best pass catching RB in the stable.
Just for good measure, Detroit disses Mel Kiper Jr. right back.
4/18/2009
The Boston Globe tackles the RB “tandem”; a pox on fantasy football, but more or less the way of the world in the NFL.
Can’t decide if the guy that does the Madden impression will get more or less work with the real Madden retired. Baltimore Sun has a hard hitting interview with Frank Caliendo.
4/17/2009
Chris Collinsworth will replace Madden on Sunday Night Football. Never been a big fan of the Collinsworth. If you miss Madden all ready, you can check out his Bocce Ball tournament.
Mel Kiper disses the Lions. So does this New Orleans Times-Picayune columnist.
I will ask that while dissing; please separate “Detroit” from “Lions”. The Detroit area isn’t half bad of a place and Detroiters are friendly hard working people. The Lions are the worst organization in the history of organizations.
4/12/2009
Quote of the year nominee, Drew Sharp, Detroit Free Press columnist discussing the Lions using three consecutive first round picks on wide receivers...
“People knew it was a dumb idea because the Lions thought of it.”
Byron Leftwich signed with the Buccaneers adding to a QB stable that includes Brian Griese and “likely starter” Luke McCown. Luke McCown?
So there’s this story where the Browns are looking to draft Jeremy Maclin and trade Braylon Edwards to the Giants. Edwards lead the league in drops with 16. Is that number all that bad? Dwayne Bowe dropped 13, Brandon Marshall dropped 12 in just 15 games.
4/8/2009
A hurdle of some kind was cleared for building a stadium in the Los Angeles area. I say it’s the Jags who would move. But this dude from the LA Times seems to think that Angelinos get along just fine without the NFL in their town.
First nominee for 2009 quote of the year: Kyle Orton will, “…try to score as many points as possible” in Denver.
Boo to the Indianapolis Star for running a story about cheerleaders that has no pictures of cheerleaders. Florida Times-Union has wall to wall coverage.

No team went 4-0 in 2007, the three that went 4-0 in 2006 all went 8-8 in the regular season. 8/5/2008 Another slow news day as teams gear up for the first round of preseason games. So for some fun, I dug up SI.com’s 2007 pre-season fantasy football player rankings. Frank Gore #4 overall player, Reggie Bush #12. J.P Losman ranked above E Manning, Roethlisberger and Favre. Yikes.
Deteted all the old 2008 stories to spare myself further embarrasment about man-love for Wills McGahee, J.T. O'Sullivan and Ricky Williams. But there was some stuff I just didn't have the heart to remove from the internet forever. Consider this 2008's Greatest Hits...

Kansas City rookies dancing with senior citizens
Lot to discuss with the Brady Quinn situation. First of all, dude's cut like a gladiator, but misses the rest of the season with a boo-boo finger. (Yours truly broke his right index finger playing ball in the eighth grade. Not only did I finish the game, I got two hits, and played an error-less shortstop). Then Romeo names him the starter for 2009, even though, I wouldn’t bet that Crennell will be the coach in 2009. Better yet, what a way to motivate your squad for the rest of the year. “We’re gonna put this Anderson dude in, remember him, he led us to that 10-6 record last season. But he’s just keeping the seat warm for Boo-Boo Finger. Go get ‘em fellas”
If you’ve been a Roundtable reader all season, you may have figured out that yours truly is a Detroiter and a Lions hatea. I’m not even a frustrated fan anymore; I gave up on this squad years ago. In previewing this Sunday’s Panthers/Lions game, The Charlotte Observer and former Detroit Free Press writer Reid Creager sums up the situation for his North Carolina readers.
